Auditor-Comptroller Releases Sales Tax Report

Auditor-Comptroller Joe Harn recently posted El Dorado County’s sales tax update for the quarter ending September 2021 on the county’s website. The report says countywide sales tax revenue increased a meager 0.2% from the same period in 2020. This minimal overall revenue increase contrasts sharply with the 16 .6% in the Sacramento area.

“County sales tax revenue was flat in the third quarter, and our revenue is well behind other Sacramento-area jurisdictions, as one of the world’s largest online retailers changed the way it allocates sales tax,” Harn said. “Online transactions are no longer reported in the community where the goods are actually delivered, but instead sales tax is paid to the municipality where the shipping warehouse is located.”

While this significant shift in sales tax allocation will have minimal impact on the county’s current year financial position, assuming online sales continue to grow, the long-term impacts will have a negative impact. powerful on our county’s ability to provide services to our residents, the auditor continues.
